TRAINING ON NEXUS GREENHOUSE FARMING IN UPPER EGYPT

In December 2021, GEBAL conducted a participatory, 2-day training course for the trainers working with our local partner, the Dandara Development Center, on how to design, operate, manage, and maintain sustainable greenhouses in Upper Egypt. The training took place in GEBAL’s model water-energy-food nexus greenhouse, built in Dandara and Esna for Schneider Electric.

This greenhouse is fully powered by solar energy, climate-controlled, and integrates fish and crop farming to save water, nutrients, and ensure “more crop per drop” of water. The local trainers are now in a position to conduct hands-on training courses for local farmers on integrated, solar-powered protected farming.

The goal of these local training sessions is to generate interest, transfer and share knowledge, and develop capacity among local farmers to switch from open field, flood irrigated farming to sustainable, integrated, and climate-smart growing techniques. The trainings formed part of the project GEBAL implemented for Schneider Electric.

Hydroponics Training for local farmers and community members in Dandara and Esna, Upper Egypt

n January 2022, GEBAL, in partnership with Urban Greens, conducted two training sessions for a total of 40 farmers and interested community members on hydroponic farming in Dandara and Esna, Upper Egypt.

The training formed part of a US Forest Service-funded project “Environmental Education through Creative Community Engagement” and was conducted by Abdallah Tawfik, one of the owners of Urban Greens Egypt. The training was hosted by our local partners, the Dandara Development Center and the Dandara Cultural Center.

The two training sessions introduced the benefits of urban farming and hydroponic growing, the components of basic hydroponic systems, as well as the operation of these extremely productive and water-efficient growing systems.

Two model systems installed in each village will enable the trainees to see the systems in operation at any time. GEBAL was particularly happy about the active participation of local women in the training courses.
