GROWING A FOOD FOREST FOR IMMERSIVE LEARNING
In March 2022, GEBAL opened a community garden on the beautiful Nile River banks in Dandara, Qena. Funded by the US Forest Service, the garden is a food forest designed for biodiversity and permaculture.
Owned and operated by the Dandara Cultural Center, the garden will become a destination for environment-themed day trips for the 10 kindergartens the Center runs in Dandara, as well as for other educational institutions in the area.
Dandara’s new community garden enables play and interaction with nature, as well as educating children on sustainability, biodiversity, permaculture, solar power, integrated farming, and environmental stewardship.
The children who inaugurated the garden particularly loved the play elements. Planting herbs and flowers, the kids already started to claim ownership of their new garden. One girl said she could not wait to watch the plants and trees grow. Since its opening, the garden has hosted several groups of children from kindergartens run by the Dandara Cultural Center.
